Girls' Generation

Girls' Generation (Korean소녀시대So Nyeo Shi Dae) is a South Korean girl group formed by S.M. Entertainment in 2007.[1][2] They are also referred to asSoShi (소시) or SNSD, both abbreviated forms of the group's Korean name, and are known in Japan as Shoujo Jidai. The nine member group consists ofTaeyeonJessicaSunnyTiffanyHyoyeonYuriSooyoungYoona andSeohyun.
The group gained attention at the beginning of their career with songs such as "Into the New World" and "Kissing You" but it was not until 2009 when they gained significant popularity with their hit single "Gee", which would be named as South Korea's "Song of the Decade".[3] The group solidified their place in the Korean music industry with follow-up singles "Tell Me Your Wish", "Run Devil Run", and "Oh!" from late 2009 to early 2010. In 2011, after a series of activities in Japan, the group returned to the Korean music scene with "The Boys", which was released in three languages: Korean, Japanese, and for the first time, English. Till the end of 2012, the group has sold over 100,000 copies for each of their six Korean studio album releases, totaling over 4.4 million albums and 30 million digital singles along with their EPssingles and releases in other languages.[4] In 2010 alone, the group sold more than 11,730,000 albums and singles collectively.[5] The group's immense popularity in their native South Korea has earned them titles "The Nation's Singers" and "The Nation's Girl Group".[6] The Sisa Journal named the group as the most influential entertainers for the years 2011 and 2012, making them the first female idol group in history to make the list.[7] They have also been listed as #1 on the Top Female Singer's list for 4 consecutive years in a row (sans 2nd half of 2011 at #2) on the Leespiar Popularity Survey in Korea.[8] [9] Asia Todayplaced the group at forty-four on the 50 Korean Power Leaders list in 2011.[10]Forbes also revealed the group were most powerful entertainers in South Korea for the year of 2011.[5]
The group began a foray into the Japanese music scene in late 2010 underNayutawave Records, with Japanese remakes of their 2009 Korean hits "Genie" and "Gee". The group's debut Japanese album, Girls' Generation, released in June 2011, is currently the highest selling album in Japan by a Korean group in Oricon history. It was certified "Million" by the Recording Industry Association of Japan, which made them the second Korean artist to earn such an achievement in Japan since label mate BoA's "Best of Soul" in 2005.[11] The group returned to the Japanese music scene in June 2012 with single "Paparazzi", followed by two other single albums, "Oh! / All My Love Is For You" and "Flower Power", concluded by their second full length Japanese album, Girls' Generation II ~Girls & Peace~.
In April 2012, the group formed Girls' Generation-TTS (known simply as "TaeTiSeo"), their first sub-unit composed of members Taeyeon, Tiffany, and Seohyun. The subgroup's debut EP, Twinkle, peaked at #126 on the Billboard 200, becoming the highest charting K-Pop album on the chart thus far.[12]
In January 2013, the group came back to the Korean scene with the fourth Korean studio album (sixth overall) I Got a Boy, which immediately became a domestic and global hit, receiving an all-kill on Korean charts[13] and debuting at #1 on Billboard"World Albums" chart.[14] The release of this album was followed by a series of live performances. The group will also embark on their second Japan Arena Tour in February, 2013.

[Album Review] Girls Generation's "I Got a Boy"

Unconventional. Unexpected. Unmatched. Girls' Generation's Korean comeback was highly anticipated, and the group didn't disappoint as they released their 4th Korean album "I Got a Boy", unleashing the strongest track of their career.
The album's title track "I Got a Boy" is admittedly a grower. The first listen takes you through a confusing series of melody changes that leave you scratching your head, wondering what in the world is going on with the song. And the answer is simple: you just haven't heard any song like it before. The song does something new and innovative with its music, changing up its tune at regular intervals.
After getting over the initial confusion of hearing a brand new style of music, one begins to realize that the production of the song is absolutely brilliant. The melody follows along with the song lyrically, with transitions between the funky rock chords, dancehall electro reminiscent of a Major Lazer tune and even someTaetiseo soul becoming coherent once you know to expect it. The result of this risky move by SM Entertainment is a song that is incredibly interesting, immensely deep, and rich in sound.
While SM Entertainment did something daringly fresh for the album's title track, the rest of the album follows a more conventional structure and sound you can expect from the group. None of the tracks are particularly bad per se, but they certainly don't stand out the way "I Got a Boy", which should be expected considering how forward-thinking and unique the track is.
Some of the more notable songs include "Baby Maybe", a light-hearted, almost bubbly track that is reminiscent of Girls' Generation fans first fell in love with; "Dancing Queen", a remake of Duffy's "Mercy" that was meant to be a title track years ago and has all the feelings of their earlier hits; and "Talk Talk", a refreshingly unique track among the more typical genres explored in the rest of the album.
Unfortunately, the strength of the album as a whole is weakened by the less-than-memorable ballads found in the album. Both "Promise" and "Lost In Love" are easily forgettable due to the lack of anything special to draw the listener in.
Despite some of the filler tracks, Girls' Generation's new album sets the bar extremely high as they introduce a daring new sound that has never been attempted before and will be hard to replicate in the future. Even with a plethora of great songs to choose from throughout their career, "I Got a Boy" stands out as being their strongest one yet.

Two old friends meet again
Wearin' older faces
And talk about the places they've been

Two old sweethearts who fell apart
Somewhere long ago
How are they to know
Someday they'd meet again
And have a need for more than reminiscin'

Maybe this time
It'll be lovin' they'll find
Maybe now they can be more than just friends
She's back in his life
And it feels so right
Maybe this time, love won't end

It's the same old feeling back again
It's the one that they had way back when
They were too young to know when love is real
But somehow, some things never change
And even time hasn't cooled the flame
It's burnin' even brighter than it did before
It got another chance, and if they take it...

Maybe this time
It'll be lovin' they'll find
Maybe now they can be more than just friends
She's back in his life
And it feels so right
Maybe this time, love won't end

She's smilin' like she used to smile way back then
She's feelin' like she used to feel way back when
They tried, but somethin' kept them
Waiting for this magic moment

Maybe this time
It'll be lovin' they'll find
Maybe now they can be more than just friends
She's back in his life
And it feels so right
Maybe this time...

Maybe this time
Maybe this time love won't end
